Syracuse villas Holiday rentals - villas & apartments to rent Syracuse

Syracuse sits in the southeast corner of Sicily on the Ionian coast below the Iblei Mountains and is a UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The city is like an open air museum and is a constant reminder of the ancient civilizations that shaped its fascinating history from the Greeks and Romans to the Byzantines and Aragonese. Not surprisingly, Syracuse has discreet quarters such as Neapolis, Acradina, Ortgia, Tyche, and Epipoli which are tourist hubs in their own right.

However, the tiny island of Ortigia in the harbour, connected to the mainland by 3 small bridges, is where the historic centre is located. Its easy to spend a day wandering around the narrow back streets being transported back in time taking in the sights such as the seventh century Dumo and the Fountain of Arethusa.

Nightlife

An evening in Ortigia is not to missed with its many cafes, bars, restaurants and clubs. The nightlife here is second to none catering for all tastes - from chic and sophisticated alfresco dining to partying at one of the nightclubs, most of which sit between the Piazza Archimede and the Piazza Duomo.

For something a little different, the Ancient Greek theater in the Parco Archaeologico often puts on evening shows of classical Greek plays suring the summer.

Some of Syracuse's popular beaches

To the south of Syracuse is the Maddalena Peninsula that is known for its pristine white sandy beaches and towering cliffs. For cave lovers, you can take a boat and explore the Grotta di Capo Meli, Grotta del Gambero and Grotta della Pillirina. Cala Mosche

The beaches of Noto Marina such as Cala Mosche are known for their unspoilt beauty and crystal clear waters that are ideal for snorkeling. Cala Mosche is often cited as one of the most beautiful in Italy but be prepared - there are zero facilities!

Island of Ortigia

The tiny island of Ortigia has stunning white sandy beaches and has the advantage of being close to all the cafes, bars and restaurants. Staying in a holiday rental here means everything is on your doorstep.

Agnone Beach

This is a popular beach for families with long stretches of golden sand and calm waters. There are beach clubs that provide all the facilities you could wish for including watersports plus there are many "free" sections where all you need is your own umbrella.

Syracuse has a warm, sub-tropical climate with mild winters and hot summers. Temperatures rarely drop below 22°C until the end of October and can peak at 35°C and more in August. Spring is generally the best time to visit - it comes early in Sicily with the almond trees blossoming in February and the spring flowers in full bloom in March.
